Veltro Vacations rents cabins on the water at Penetanguishene, on Georgian Bay. Before a guest books, the first thing they meet is the mark, and it had to work like the sign hung by a cabin door: a house, a tree, the water, read at a glance. We started from a sheet of loose pieces, tried four directions, and drew them together into one round, line-drawn badge.

01Sketches
Pieces first,
then the mark.
Before any logo, one artboard held everything it might be made of: a cabin on the water, an A-frame, a triangle of mountain, waves, a sunset, a letter V, a ring. Each drawn in single line; all four directions that followed were built from this sheet.
02Directions
Four directions,
one answer.
One used only the letter; one stood the cabin on the name; one boxed it into a square stamp; one ringed it into a round badge. The first three each had a case, but only the circle held house, tree, water and name inside one outline — like the sign hung by a cabin door.

03Refinement
One badge,
drawn five times.
Once the circle was settled, the details moved: waves or a still shoreline, heavy lettering or light, dots at the sides or none, two rows of waves or three. The badge that went out dropped the dots, set the name heavy and the word below light, and kept two rows of waves.

Five parts,
read top to bottom.
The name on top, the water below, the house and tree standing on the line between. Inside the ring, tree, house and water share one line weight; the outer ring and the lettering are heavier and hold the whole badge together.
- 1VELTRO, bold, set along the top of the ring.
- 2A pine: three tiers of branches on one trunk.
- 3The cabin: a round window and an arched door in the gable, the roof boards drawn as diagonals.
- 4Two rows of waves, offset by half a wave, so the cabin stands at the water’s edge.
- 5VACATIONS, lighter and widely spaced, along the bottom.
05Colourways
One brown,
four ways to use it.
There is one brand colour, a brown like wet bark. The files come four ways — reversed on brown, a solid brown disc, black line, and reversed on black — so print, the website and a social avatar each have the one they need.
