dug like pools.

Terry Harris Pool Builder is a design study the studio made in 2023, without a client: a mark for an imagined pool builder. We drew no water and no waves. Instead the two initials became two building sites — laid flat on the ground and dug out. Blue is the floor, the dark band is the wall, and the letters turn into pools. Which is, after all, what a pool builder does.

01The mark
Lay the letters down.
Then dig.
Draw a T and an H as if they were site plans. Lay them flat on the ground and look at them at a slant. Then dig: the far walls drop into shadow and lighten, navy into blue, until they meet the floor. Three steps, and the letters are pools — no ripple needed.
1Plan: two letters, like two building plots.
2Laid down: set flat on the ground, seen at one angle.
3Dug: the walls fall into shadow; the floor is blue.
02Lockups
Three ways to sign
one name.
The name is set in tall, heavy condensed capitals; POOL BUILDER runs light and widely spaced beneath — one loud line, one quiet. The horizontal lockup suits wide spaces; the stacked one sets the name in blue under the mark. The perspective lockup lays the name on the ground too, in the same plane as the two pools.

03Colour
Floor, wall,
and the name.
Three colours, no more. Pool blue for the floors, and for the name in the stacked lockup; deep navy only in the shadow of the walls, shading down into blue; black for the name. In one colour the mark becomes a flat silhouette and the walls go.

04Business card
Two pools
for the pocket.
The 2023 mockup prints the perspective lockup on a white card with nothing around it. Re-set here at 3.5 × 2 in, the front carries only the mark lying on the card; the back takes the horizontal lockup and a blue rule; its contact lines are left off this page.
