A studio design study, made without a client: in 2023 one of our designers built an identity for an imagined phone-case shop. The whole system hangs on one tag: the name, in a swinging sixties display face, cut out of a black plate. On pink the letters read pink; on magenta tape they read magenta. We re-set the study from the designer’s own vector file and left its stock mockups out.

01The tag
Cut out of black,
filled by the ground.
The wordmark is a single compound path: a rounded black plate with eleven letters cut clean through it. Nothing is printed in pink — the colour is whatever lies underneath. Laid across three of the study’s colours at once, the same tag reads three ways.
02Colour
Five grounds,
one tag.
The palette comes from the study’s own boards: the pink gradient of its posts, the magenta of its packing tape, the rust of its case colours, the silver of a mailer — and black, which is the tag itself. On a black mailer the tag turns white.

03Packing tape
Seal the box,
say the name.
On packing tape the tag repeats at a slant in brick rows, black on magenta, so any torn length still carries the whole name somewhere. Redrawn here at full length from the study’s poly-bag board.
04Labels
Three stickers
for three mailers.
The study put the tag on bubble mailers three ways: black on a silver bag; black over a strip of magenta tape on a grey one; and reversed to white on a black one. Here the labels stand on their own, without the stock mailer photographs.
05Formats
One post,
three sizes.
Every board in the study was exported three ways — a 2160 px square for Instagram and WeChat, 1620 × 2160 for Xiaohongshu, 3840 × 2160 for the web — eighteen files in all. The plainest of them, the tag on the pink gradient, is re-set here at all three sizes.
