North York Academy is a private high school in North York, Toronto, teaching the Ontario curriculum from Grade 9 to 12 with an arts programme alongside. Its admission guide has to speak to two kinds of reader, so Chinese and English run side by side. We drew the school’s NJ monogram, carried it into a bilingual 2022 guide, split that into Chinese, English and C9 Arts editions in 2023, and made its course posters and summer-camp materials.

01The mark
An N,
locked into a J.
Two red uprights and a charcoal diagonal make the N; a charcoal J drops down its right side and curls underneath, so the two letters lock into one shape. The name beside it runs in two weights: NORTH YORK bold and tight, ACADEMY light and spaced wide.

02The guide
One structure,
four editions.
School profile, curriculum and faculty, university pathways, student life, housing and meals, and finally how to apply: the guide walks a family through the school in that order. In 2022 it was one book in Chinese and English; in 2023 it became three — a Chinese edition, an English edition and an arts edition under the C9 Arts name. The printed covers carried a stock photograph of the Toronto skyline across the top; re-set here from the originals, that half is the school’s charcoal with a red maple leaf.

The printed guide crowds every page with stock photos, portraits and admission letters. For this portfolio we re-set three of its pages from the guide’s own text and colours — no stock people, one picture and one idea to a page — to show how far the system can go. Faculty portraits, student photographs and offer letters stay out.

报读艺术课程需有绘画基础，并提交至少三幅作品。
Art applicants: some painting experience and at least three pieces of work.
