Lazy Cat Cafe sells coffee and dessert, keeps a house of cats, and finds them homes. The logo draws the name: a cat too lazy to get up, soaking in a coffee cup. Over two years it went onto the menus, the card and the coupons, and followed the café from Markham and Scarborough to downtown Toronto.

01The mark

The name,
drawn as it reads.

A pink cat, eyes shut, half sunk in a cup with one paw over the rim; a coffee bean on the cup. 懒猫咖啡 is set in a round-ended bold, the English beneath. Two colours only, cat-cup pink and cocoa — on a pink ground the cat and cup turn white.

02The menu

Two pages: fifteen coffees, seventeen house drinks. No descriptions — each drink is drawn as its glass, with the milk, coffee, fruit and ice visible in layers, and a fine rule carrying the Chinese name over the English. People order by looking, not reading.

03Card and coupons

An hour free —
tear along the line.

The business card says four things — cat, cafe, dessert, adoption — beside a raised paw. The six coupons share one layout: the value in heavy italic on the pink side (an hour free, $10, 50, 30, 10 and 5% off), a curved perforation, and the logo on the white stub.

04Opening

A soft opening in Markham,
a grand one downtown.

For the 2023 soft opening in Markham, the poster drew a little shop with “We are OPEN!” on the door and the pink cat on the roof, with the menu’s drinks lined up below. For the downtown opening on July 16, 2024 we made a pink poster and a 20-second vertical film: the title and date drop in, and cats and cups fill the frame at the end.

05AI paintings

The cats on the walls
were painted with AI.

In August 2023 we generated a set of cat paintings for the café with AI — two tabbies under the moon, a ginger cat before blossom, a kitten in the flowers — held to one thick, painterly style. In a cat café, there are cats in the frames as well.
