FATE — First Aid Training & Education — teaches first aid and CPR around Sudbury, Ontario, from the Workplace First Aid & CPR manual that Code 8 supplies to its partner trainers. In 2022 we made FATE’s edition of that manual — the cover and an About FATE page — then the card students receive when they pass, and the cover of the handout for its wilderness course.

01The mark
One heart,
five bands
and a pulse.
The heart came from FATE: red, crossed by five white bands, with a heartbeat running through them, and FATE in deep burgundy beneath. The studio’s work was to set it for print — stacked in a white panel at the head of the cover, side by side on the card and at the head of a page, reversed where the ground is dark. Two colours do everything: the heart’s red and the wordmark’s burgundy.
02The manual
A partner’s manual,
made FATE’s own.
FATE teaches from Workplace First Aid & CPR, the manual Code 8 supplies to the trainers it works with. The FATE edition keeps the manual’s cover system — a photograph across the top half, a red title panel, “Skills to Save Lives” in deep red — and puts FATE’s heart and its line at the top. The original’s class photograph was a stock image; here the heart’s five bands take its place. Inside, before the first lesson, a page introduces FATE: a short welcome, three promises and the three courses most people come for.

Emergency First Aid with CPR
Emergency First Aid covers the recognition and treatment of airway, breathing and cardiovascular emergencies.
Standard First Aid with CPR
The Standard First Aid course is designed to provide the necessary tools to recognize and manage emergencies, including the “ABCD’s” of first aid.
Basic Life Support CPR (formerly HCP)
Basic Life Support (CPR-BLS) is a comprehensive 3 to 4-hour course for professional rescuers, covering airway management, respiratory arrest and CPR for adult, child and infant patients.

Something to keep
in a wallet.
Students who pass leave with a card. The front is a form the instructor fills in by hand — which course, the date, when it expires, who taught it — so the labels leave room for a pen and the course names are set in red, ready to be ticked. The back lists every course FATE teaches under the heart and its line. Re-set here, the labels get back the spaces the original lost (“CourseDate”), and the photograph behind the list is gone so the list reads.

The Wilderness First Aid course has its own handout, meant to go out on the trail afterwards. Its cover trades the classroom for an arched window and a white disc holding the heart; the title is set in grey and red, with the first-aid cross between FIRST and AID. The original window held a stock photograph of hikers. This version fills it with contour lines — the map a wilderness course never leaves behind.
