2021–2023

The Canada China Youth Art Association — CCYAA — was founded in 2020 in Markham, Ontario: a bilingual arts association for young people, where dance, song, recitation and painting all need a stage. In 2021 it asked us for a mark that could say youth, Canada and every art form at once. Over the next two years we carried that mark into festival sponsorship guides, stage screens and programmes.

01The sketches

Seen from above,
children in a circle.

The working file keeps the first reasoning. Canada is a maple leaf; youth is a figure with open arms — seen from above, an arc. Put several in a circle and give each one a colour. The final mark kept the circle and the colours, moved the leaf into the last “a” of the wordmark, and put a y, for youth, at the centre.

02The identity

Seven segments,
one centre.

Purple, pink, orange, yellow and green overlap around the ring; where they cross, two darker segments appear, like stage lights meeting. The wordmark is set in round-ended lowercase, drawn with the same stroke as the y at the centre. The files went out as horizontal, stacked, reversed and one-colour versions, for screens, print and the stage.

03The festival

Build the stage,
then invite the room.

For its Youth Art Festival in Markham in November 2022, the association needed a guide to hand to sponsors. Fourteen landscape pages, Chinese and English side by side. The cover sets the bilingual title large; inside, each page does one job — who the association is, what the festival is, when and where, what a sponsor receives — and each is built the same way: a bilingual heading, a short red rule, then the text.

Logo & identity · Colour, reversed & mono files · 2022 festival sponsorship guide · Event screens, posters & programmes

The logo sketches and lockup files come from the studio’s 2021 design file. The stage photograph is from the client’s archive, cropped so that no performer’s face appears; the photographer was not recorded. The guide’s design and layout are the studio’s; its cover and two inside pages are re-set here from the original copy and layout, without the stock painted background of the cover or the lantern, temple and venue photographs inside (stock or third-party). The guide’s contact details, sponsorship prices and photographs of children are not shown either.
