ASK Accounting & Financial Services Inc. keeps books and does the financial work for its clients. It wanted a mouse pad for the desk — something pressed by a wrist and crossed by a mouse all day, that still says whose it is at a glance. We gave most of the surface to the hand and put the name on the edge under the wrist.

01The mark
In the open angle of the K,
a blue triangle.
The mark is ASK’s own: heavy grotesque capitals in graphite, and in the open angle of the K an electric-blue triangle pointing back at the name. We didn’t change it; we measured it. The triangle’s point sits on the mid-line of the capitals, level with the K’s joint, and its back is flush with the K’s foot. That blue is the only strong colour on the whole pad.

Three quarters for the hand,
one edge for the name.
Nine and a half by eight inches, with rounded corners. The top three quarters belong to the hand and the mouse; the delivered pad filled them with a stock ink image, which this page leaves out, marking only the area it filled. Under a blue rule, a white band: the full lockup on the left, the triangle on its own at the right. Three images were tried for the top, all from stock. The file is set for print with bleed and safe area.

When the room runs out,
keep the triangle.
Beyond the pad, we tried for this page how the mark behaves when it shrinks. As an avatar, the whole of ASK reverses out of the blue; smaller than that — a browser tab, the corner of a file — only the triangle is left. It was part of the K all along, so it still reads on its own. A study, not delivered.
